Barnsley is a town within a knot of peaceful villages on the River Dearne in England's South Yorkshire, near Sheffield. It is a former colliery and glassmaking town, and as such boasts good transport links and as well as some very attractive scenery due to its position at the foot of the Pennines.
The town features briefly in the classic George Orwell novel "The Road To Wigan Pier". The author stayed in the town for several days to research the living conditions of the working class. Orwell criticised the amount of money invested in the construction of the new Town Hall, which he felt would have been better placed in the improvement of housing in the town.
Local attractions include the Cannon Hall Museum Park & Gardens, Wentworth Castle & Gardens, Pot House Hamlet — a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and the Cooper Gallery.
