Bargoed is a pretty town of the picturesque Rhymney Valley, in Wales, near Caerphilly. Originally a market town, Bargoed developed largely due to the opening of the Deep Nagivation colliery, in the steep and narrow Taff Bargoed Valley. The town is served by Bargoed railway station and offers excellent links to the neighbouring towns and cities of South Wales due to its industrial heritage. The Valleys of South Wales feature a number of significant bridges and viaducts built to allow access and transport of goods from the colliery.
Harris's Deep Navigation Colliery, opened in 1878, named after F. W. Harris and his Harris Navigation Steam Coal Company. The land of the former Deep Navigation has recently been landscaped and now forms part of the new 'Millenium Park'. The site is also now a haven for Red Kites and otters. The Trim Trail and various heritage walks of the area are very popular among visitors. The park also features a fishing lake, which is frequented by numerous canoe clubs and water sports enthusiasts.
