Bangor on Dee

The village of Bangor-on-Dee in Wrexham, Wales lies on the banks of the picturesque River Dee that journeys from Wales to England; rising in Snowdonia and flowing east, marking the border with England before heading out to sea. A settlement at Bangor-on-Dee came grew up around the site of a monastery that was established around 560 by Saint Dunod. The monastery at Bangor brought growth and development to the area and became an important religious centre before it was destroyed in 616, leaving no trace today of its existence. It is recorded that 1200 monks were slain when Aethelfrith, the King of Northumbria, attacked and defeated the Kingdom of Powys at the Battle of Chester. The village church of Bangor-on-Dee is thought to be built on the site of the former monastery.

Bangor-on-Dee is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts, bird-watchers, anglers, walkers and those simply looking for beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife, flora and fauna.

The village offers two pubs and some amenities but is within reach of further developed towns offering a broader choice for shopping, dining and entertainment. A lovely view can be enjoyed from the five-arched stone bridge that dates from about 1660 and it is believed to have been built by Inigo Jones. Racing enthusiasts know Bangor-on-Dee for the Bangor-on-Dee racecourse, a National Hunt racecourse just outside the village. Racing first took place at Bangor on Dee Racecourse in 1859 and continues regularly to this day.
