Bangor

The coastal city of Bangor in Gwynedd, Wales Bangor is nearby the Menai Strait that separates Gwynedd on the mainland, from the island of Anglesey. The city is quite literally in the shadow of Bangor Mountain; this landmark is well known for blocking out the sunlight on some areas of the High Street throughout the winter months. Bangor developed when a monastic establishment was founded here early in the 6^th century by the Celtic saint, Deiniol. The original establishment was located where visitors today find Bangor Cathedral; much work has been carried out on the cathedral over the centuries, with the earliest part of the present building dating back to the early 12^th century. An unusual feature in the grounds of the cathedral is the unique "Biblical Garden” that is planted with an example of every plant mentioned in the Bible.

Bangor offers visitors all the pleasures of a small city, with a great choice of eateries, pubs, entertainment, shops, attractions and historic buildings; including of course the cathedral that is one of the oldest in Britain. The second longest pier in Wales is in Bangor, stretching out to sea for 1,500 feet. Garth Pier came very close to being demolished 1974 when the poor condition threatened the end of this historic landmark; thankfully Grade II listed status was bestowed after much local support and the pier survives. Visitors come to enjoy the city as well as the surrounding area; Gwynedd is rich with countryside, diverse wildlife habitats and a variety of flora, fauna and landscapes.
