Bampton

The small village of Bampton is set in the valley of the River Lowther in the picturesque county of Cumbria and is surrounded by hills; abundant in diverse flora, fauna and wildlife. This area is an ideal location for walkers, bird watchers, lovers of the countryside and those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. The village lays either side of the River Lowther that is joined here by the Haweswater Beck. The Bampton village church at Bampton Grange is dedicated to St. Patrick and dates from the early 18th century, although the site it occupies by the river was the site of an earlier medieval church.

Bampton is a tranquil place with just a few amenities, a lovely village store and tearooms and a pub; with a further choice of shops, restaurants and pubs in nearby, more developed towns. The traditional red telephone box here is a bit of a celebrity, having appeared in the 1980’s cult classic movie ‘Withnail & I’. Another site of local interest is the vicarage that is right opposite St. Patrick’s and home to the famous Tinklar Library. The library has a vast collection of books, many of which are written in Latin.
