Balfron

The village of Balfron in the Stirling area of Scotland is set in an idyllic location near Endrick Water, the river which flows into famous Loch Lomond; the largest lake in Great Britain that is a popular leisure destination and is of course, featured in the well known song. Within easy reach of Glasgow, Balfron is a settlement that attracts city workers as a wonderful rural place to live and commute. There is legend that Balfron was once attacked by wolves who stole the children and it is this that led to the naming of the village; ‘Balfron’ is the Gaelic for 'village of mourning'. Further research by historians indicates that the legend may in fact be about Vikings, as they are known to have stolen children when attacking villages. The village grew and developed in the late 18th century when Robert Dunmore built the Ballindalloch Cotton Works and Balfron went on to rapidly become a thriving industrial village.

Balfron offers ample amenities and is within reach of other towns and villages when looking for additional choices for shopping, dining and leisure. There is plenty for visitors to see, do and enjoy in the area that is abundant in natural beauty, diverse wildlife and flora and fauna. In Balfron there is an ancient oak tree, ‘The Clachan Oak’ that is reputed to be where William Wallace rested and later, provided a hiding place for Rob Roy.
