The small market town of Baldock in the county of Hertfordshire is one of this county’s oldest settlements, lying as it does at the intersection of two important, ancient roads. The prehistoric Icknield Way is thought to be the oldest road in the country, old even when the Romans invaded and the Great North Road is where the A1 is today. Baldock dates back to at least Roman times but the town we see now was established by the Knights Templar in the 12th century. The modern layout of the town and many of the historic buildings here, date from the 16th century and one of the oldest is the impressive Church of St. Mary with its recognisable 14th century tower and beautiful monument depicting an angel carrying her soul up to heaven.
Baldock has good amenities, pubs, eateries and shopping and open spaces as well as easy access to the wealth of attractions and activities in the surrounding area. One of the best ways to uncover the heritage of this town is by visiting the town’s Baldock Museum. A charming, community-run museum that charts the changing fortunes of the town, looking at Baldock's medieval merchants and the prosperous maltsters and brewers of its Georgian heyday whose grand houses still line the town's centre.
