Baarrow-upon-Soar

The large village of Barrow upon Soar on the banks of the River Soar has an emblem of a dinosaur, noting the fossil that was found here in 1851. The plesiosaur was a type of marine reptile that was around between the middle Triassic Period until the end of the Cretaceous Period; locally it is known as the 'Barrow Kipper'. The discovery was made in a lime pit outside of the village and is now on display at the Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery. Barrow upon Soar’s growth came with the hosiery and knitwear industries as well as the commerce facilitated by the river.

This vibrant village has good shops and amenities that provide for many of the smaller villages in the area. The surrounding countryside and picturesque riverside offer wonderful opportunities to enjoy the diversity of flora, fauna and wildlife along with lovely walks and opportunities for boating, cycling and other outdoor pursuits.
