The village of Aylesford in the pretty garden county of Kent grew from a small riverside settlement, to the picturesque village we know today. History though had its dramas here and in the year 455, Jutish leaders Hengist and Horsa who were supposed to defend the country, vanquished the ancient Britons at Aylesford in a great battle. The next 300 years in Aylesford’s history were under the rule of the decedents of Hengist. Another notable event was in the 13th century when Aylesford's High Street saw the building of a medieval Friary by the Carmelites; it was the first Carmelite order to be founded in Europe. Although the main part of this impressive structure was destroyed in the 1930's, the Carmelites successfully restored it to its former glory after taking control again in 1949. It is now a place of retreat with glorious artworks including ceramics by Adam Kossowski.
There is a charm and tranquil beauty to Aylesford and its heritage is still evident in the oldest parts of the village that lie to the north and south of the river. The Chequers Inn and the George House as well as the almshouses are excellent examples to explore. Development has continued here, with good amenities and a range of shops, eateries and traditional pubs as well as lovely open spaces. A stroll to the river brings the sight of a beautiful five-arched medieval bridge that has inspired photographers and painters.
