The market town of Axminster in the beautiful county of Devon is sited on a hill that overlooks the River Axe as it heads out to the English Channel. Visitors may recognise the name of Axminster for its association with the carpets of the same name. Thomas Whitty started the carpet industry here in 1755 and it was on Midsummer's Day that he commenced weaving on the first carpet to be made in Axminster. It took many hours and much labour to complete the carpets, so each was prized and when a new carpet was finished, it was often carried through the streets of the town to the sound of the bells from The Minster Church of St. Mary. The carpet would then be laid out across the pews of the former Independent Church, now the United Reformed Church in Chard Street for all the townsfolk to see. While Axminster carpet is made in the town of Axminster, this type of carpet is now manufactured all over the world.
There is a wide variety of things to do in Axminster and visitors will find plenty of historical sites, outdoor activities and family attractions. The historic market is still held every Thursday, offering local produce and merchandise.
