Atherton

Atherton is a town of over 20,000 inhabitants situated in Greater Manchester, England. From the early 17th century and for several centuries after, the town was nicknamed Chowbent, or Bent and the town still hosts an annual beer festival Bent 'n' Beer every January.

One particularly interesting feature in the town is the model village built by mineowners Fletcher Burrows in the 1870s depicting a typical colliery town in great detail. This Victorian village is still present on either side of Leigh Road as this, together with St Michael and All Angel's Church, is now under conservation. Ena Mill, one of Atherton's large spinning mills, also survives.

Atherton's main industry was formally in coal mining, nail manufacture, cotton mills, and iron-works. Modern Atherton is now the third largest retail centre in the Borough of Wigan although there is still some manufacturing present in the town.
