Askam-in-furness

Askam and Ireleth, were once two completely different villages, each with their own history and traditions, and have only recently to merged. Situated on the north-western coast of England, in the county of Cumbria, Ireleth began as a mediaeval farming village on the hillside overlooking the flats of the Duddon Estuary; while the much younger Askam was established after the 18th-century discovery of large quantities of iron ore, nearer to the shore.

The River Duddon estuary and surrounding countryside are known for their protected wildlife populations, while the villages' exposed position on the eastern bank facing the Irish Sea make them a popular place to visit among walkers and visitors to the area. The towns are situated conveniently on the edge of the Lake District National park and enjoy spectacular views of both the rolling valley landscapes and the estuary on which they lie.
