Ashton in Makerfield

Ashton-in-Makerfield is a town of 30,000 inhabitants located in the borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester. The town was formerly part of Lancashire under the name of Ashton-le-Willows. The main industry of the town was formerly in the manufacturing of locks and hinges in addition to coal mining. The town holds a market twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The site of the old factories is now the town's shopping centre, The Gerard Centre. The town features the only public house in the world to bear the name "The Hingemakers Arms", which was a family-run pub for generations until 2006.
