Ashford is a town in Kent, in the South East of England, situated on the River Stour and at the edge of an ancient forest. The most notable feature of the town is a rare First World War Mk. IV tank that is on display in the town centre. The original settlement of Ashford is thought to have been established in 893AD by refugees of the Danish Viking raids on the existing villages. They chose a position along a Roman Road that was a main route for the transport of iron into Canterbury. The town is still a major communication centre for the region, with excellent transport links to both the local area and the rest of Europe.
There are are several tourist attractions in the town, including Godinton House and Gardens, the Ashford Green Corridor, the Willesborough Windmill, and the Ashford Borough Museum, which first opened in 1638 as a free grammar school. Ashford also offers a pleasant and convenient vantage point from which to explore the wider area of England's South East, including Canterbury Cathedral, Saint Augustine's Abbey, and all the sites and attractions of London.
