Ardrossan

The town of Ardrossan in Ayrshire, Scotland is set in an area of exceptional natural beauty, where the peaks of the Isle of Arran can be seen towering in the distance and with clear skies, so too can the Paps of Jura and the Mull of Kintyre. Nature lovers come to enjoy the rich variety of wildlife, flora and fauna in the area as well as the wonderful Royal Society for the Protection of Birds reserve just offshore on the small Horse Isle. The reserve is home to important populations of gulls. Along with the towns of Saltcoats and Stevenston, Ardrossan is one of a group called 'Three Towns'.

Ardrossan offers plenty of reasons to visit, with ample amenities, historic sites and attractions in the area, including Ardrossan Castle towering over the town from a ridge. Ardrossan Castle is defended by a moat, with a keep dating from the 15th century, a vaulted range containing a kitchen and cellars and within a deep passageway, is a well. The original castle was owned by Clan Barclay but was partly destroyed during the Wars of Scottish Independence in an incident that became known as ‘Wallace's Larder’; a name that is still used today in reference to the remaining vaults. Rebuilt by Clan Montgomery in the 15th century, it was in the 17th century that Castle Ardrossan was finally demolished by the soldiers of Oliver Cromwell.
