The market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, in the county of Cumbria, holds a strategic position in the Eden Valley, on a loop in the River Eden. This unique location led to its development as a market town after the Norman Conquest. Appleby Castle overlooks the town and was the home for Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century. The remarkable Lady Anne devoted much of her time to restoring the neglected estates, castles and churches in the area. Both Lady Anne and her mother, Lady Margaret, are buried in St Lawrence's Church and commemorated by magnificent tombs.
Appleby is probably best known for the annual Appleby Horse Fair, held regularly in early June since at least the 18th century. The famous fair brings Gypsies from all over Britain to the town. Tourists are now one of the best industries in Appleby and it is well placed for exploring the Lake District, the North Pennines, Swaledale and Howgill Fells. It remains an attractive market town with a great deal of charm that brings visitors back to explore more about the heritage, history and people of the area.
