Annan is a town and former royal burgh in the Scottish county of Dumfries and Galloway, neighbouring Dumfries. It is prettily situated on the River Annan, near to the English border and in the Solway Firth, which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town is characterised by a predominance of red sandstone buildings, including the Annan Academy, where writer Thomas Carlyle studied, while the town's Annan Castle was the original home of the 'de Brus' family, of Robert the Bruce. The town was once a busy maritime town, at which poet Robert Burns worked in the 1790s. It is now a popular tourist town, enjoyed for its scenic views, excellent amenities, and close proximity to a number of historic locations, with a good choice of quality holiday accommodation, a varied range of shops and entertainment venues.
