The town and port of Amlwch in Anglesey, Wales is located on majestic coastal cliffs and home to a once busy port where boats still sail to the Isle of Man and Liverpool. Legend tells that the port grew here in the Middle Ages as it offered a secluded and hidden harbour that could not be seen from the sea and would reduce the risk of attacks by Vikings. Growth and prosperity came to Amlwch around the 18th century due to its location near to Parys Mountain where the world's biggest copper mine at the time is found. The trade in copper led to the harbour being extended to accommodate the ships needed to transport the ore. Shipbuilding and other maritime industries also prospered here in the 19th century.
Amlwch remains a well developed town with ample amenities, shops, eateries and a lot of pubs; at its peak, Amlwch was said to have a pub for every four people, although there are far fewer today. The Anglesey Coastal Path passes through the town, taking visitors into outstanding natural scenery and diverse wildlife habitats, flora and fauna. The watch tower at Amlwch has a small but fascinating heritage centre that reveals the story of the town and its maritime past.
