Altrincham is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford in Greater Manchester, 8 miles south of the River Mersey. There has been a regular market in Altrincham since the town was granted its charter in 1290. Human presence is evident in the area dating back to prehistoric eras, in the form of arrowheads and centrations of artefacts near Dunham and Trafford. There are also the remains of a major Roman Road linked to legionary fortresses in Chester and York. The Bridgewater Canal was extended to reach Altrincham in 1765 and the railway reached it in 1849 bringing further growth and industry to this typically agricultural old English town, which is now popular for holiday makers visiting the town by barge.
Altrincham's is predominantly middle class and is home to a number of sports persuits clubs including Altrincham F.C. and an English Premier League ice hockey club. Stamford Park — a 16-acre recreation ground landscaped by John Shaw in 1880 — has cricket and football pitches to that purpose.
Among the popular tourist attractions of Altrincham is Dunham Massey Hall, the former home of the Earl of Stamford. This pleasant family attraction boasts Grade I listed buildings and a deer park. The town also has a lively theatre scene and the Altrincham Garrick Playhouse was host to the premier of Psycho in 1982
