Alton

Alton is a small and idyllic village in the county of Staffordshire, which is in central England. It is prettily located in the rolling Churnet Valley and features a number of listed and architecturally interesting buildings, including the Round-House, Alton Castle, The Malt House, and Alton Towers.

The village is best known as the home of the Alton Towers theme park, which was established on the grounds of the Gothic Revival mansion of the same name. The mansion was once the seat of the Earls of Shrewsbury, who established the magnificent mature gardens for which the park is particularly famous. Alton Towers Limited began in 1924, and the company held the grounds open to the public, although it wasn't until the 1980s that the theme park began to develop. It now features famous rides that include the Oblivion, Hex, Rita, Skyride, Air, Thi13een, and the Nemesis, and offers visitors the excitement of an enormous range of rides and attractions, along with strikingly beautiful grounds and the freedom to explore the historic mansion for themselves.

The village of Alton has a good number of traditional pub-restaurants, most of which are family friendly and cater well for visitors enjoying the various scenic walks in the area; there is also a wide range of holiday accommodation to choose from and good shopping prospects in the wider area.
Other local attractions include the Foxfield Steam Railway, Sudbury Hall, the National Trust Museum of Childhood, and the High Peak Trail & Cromford Canal.
