Alness is a town on the River Averon, in the Scottish council area of Highland Scotland, which includes the former county of Ross and Cromarty. It lies near the Cromarty Firth, between the towns of Invergordon to the east and the village of Evanton to the southwest. This was the location where in September 1715 a skirmish took place between Jacobite clans that included the MacKenzies and the MacDonalds, under the Earl of Seaforth against the Munros, Rosses, MacKays under the Earl of Sutherland.
Popular attractions in the area include Dunrobin Castle, the Hugh Miller Museum and Birthplace Cottage, Fort George, and the Nairn Museum, to name only a select few.
