Allonby is a village on the North West coast England in the Allerdale district of Cumbria. The village overlooks Allonby Bay in the Solway Firth, which has been certified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and which is also very rich in national historical significance, as the site of the eastern wing of Hadrian's Wall and numerous forts and castles that illustrate the centuries of conflict between, the Celts, the Romans, the Anglo-Saxons, the Normans and the Scots.
Allonby Bay is a very popular holiday destination owing to its five-mile length of sandy Blue Flag beaches and amazing views right over to the Galloway Hills of Scotland. The village is also conveniently situated on the 150 mile-long Cumbria Coastal Way long distance footpath.
Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins are said to have stayed at the 17th century Ship Hotel, which is a coaching inn that still retains its original use. There is a good choice of holiday accommodation in the village and its surrounding area that caters to all budgets and preferences, including several caravan parks, some self-catering cottages and a a few bed & breakfasts.
