Alfreton is a pretty former colliery town in the Amber Valley, Derbyshire, in central England, situated within convenient reach of the scenic Derbyshire countryside, as well as to the major cities of Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield. Alfreton's high street is characterised by a predominance of 18th century buildings, and provides a good range of independant boutiques and popular chain shops, as well as a busy indoor market hall.
An interesting landmark of the town is the former 'house of confinement', on King Street, which was built in 1820. It is a small box-like lock-up with a round headed doorway and 2 small round windows, of which only a few remain in such good condition.
