The village of Alford in Aberdeenshire, Scotland lies to the south of the River Don, which starts its journey in the Grampians, before flowing east to join the North Sea at Aberdeen. The village is set within the scenic Howe of Alford, home of the world popular Aberdeen Angus cattle breed. At the edge of the village is a life-sized iron model of a bull in celebration of the world renowned breed. To explore the history of the people and industries of the area, the Grampian Transport Museum and Alford Heritage Centre are good places to start.
Alford offers ample amenities as well as plenty to see, do and enjoy in the area with historic sites and visitor attractions. The dry ski slope is a popular place for visitors, as is Craigievar Castle, a pinkish hued fairytale castle just outside of the village. The seven-storey castle was completed in 1626 as the seat of Clan Sempill. Set amongst the rolling foothills of the Grampian Mountains, Craigevar Castle is an excellent example of the original Scottish Baronial architecture. Nearby too are fascinating archaeological sites and stone circles.
