Aldeburgh

The small seaside town of Aldeburgh on the coast of the county of Suffolk remains an area where fishing is still very much a part of daily life. In the 16th century, Aldeburgh was a thriving port and had a prosperous shipbuilding industry before becoming a fishing village and seaside resort by the 19th century. Historic reminders of the past remain and Moot Hall has been where the Town Council have met for more than 400 years. The internationally acclaimed English composer, conductor, and pianist Benjamin Britten came to live here in 1942 and is celebrated at the church of St Peter and St Paul with its attractive memorial window dedicated to his memory and on the beach is a stunning sculpture, The Scallop that is also dedicated to Britten; who took afternoon strolls here. The sculpture was created in 2003 by the Suffolk-based artist Maggi Hambling and is pierced with the words: "I hear those voices that will not be drowned", taken from Britten's opera ‘Peter Grimes’.

For visitors today, Aldeburgh provides a lovely seaside holiday destination, with  miles of unspoilt shingle coastline and picturesque heath lands as well as cultural attractions, historic sites, lots of fresh fish to buy, renowned fish and chip shops, a sheltered yachting marina and a choice of excellent restaurants and pubs. The Aldeburgh Festival of Arts that was started 1948 by Benjamin Britten, is now a renowned international festival that is held every June.
