Addlestone

The small town of Addlestone in the county of Surrey dates from Saxon times and until the 17^th century was a small hamlet. Prosperity came to Addlestone with the opening of the Wey Navigation back in the 17^th century, followed by the opening of the Basingstoke Canal in the 18^th century then with the coming of the railways in 1848, the old days of an agricultural community were transformed. A key feature of the town is ‘Crouch Oak’, a tree that is believed to date back to the 11^th century and was previously known as ‘Wycliffe's Oak’ after the medieval scholar said to have preached here. A fence was placed around the oak in 1810 in order to prevent village maidens stripping the bark to make a love potion.  

Now an attractive suburb of London, Addlestone’s town centre and particularly Station Road, have plenty of independent and high street shops, businesses, amenities, restaurants and pubs. With such easy access to London and the scenic Surrey countryside, there is a wealth of cultural attractions, historic sites and outdoor activities to enjoy both here and in the surrounding area.
