Known as "Accy" to the locals, Accrington is a town in Lancashire, in the North East of England on the River Hyndburn. For many people, the mention of the town's name will prompt the phrase "Accrington Stanley, who are they?" to cross their minds owing to the very popular milk advert in the 1980s which ridiculed the team.
With a population of more than 35,000, the town was once the centre of the cotton and textile machinery industries and is known for producing the hardest and densest building bricks in the world. Named "The Accrington NORI" the bricks were used in the construction of the Empire State Building and in the foundations of the Blackpool Tower. The town also boasts Europe's largest collection of Tiffany Glass.
The area was once part of a series of four forests used by the monarchy for hunting, known as the Hundred of Blackburnshire. The name of the Oak Hill Park is thought to reflect the large number of oak trees that once surrounded the town but which where lost to expansion in the Industrial Revolution.
