Abingdon is an English market town in Oxfordshire, neighbouring Oxford, which claims to be Britains oldest continuously occupied town, having been founded in the early Iron Age. The town is scenically situated near the river Thames in the Vale of White Horse, which is an area of formally wooded meadows overlooked by the White Horse Hills of the Ock Valley.
Abindon Abbey, also known as Saint Mary's Abbey is one of the more notable tourist attractions in the immediate area, which includes a 1st century waterway that was extended to the Abbey by the early Benedictine monks. Other notable landmarks of the town include the striking Town Hall — which is now a museum, the medieval Abingdon Bridge, and the Long Alley Almshouses.
