Abergele

The coastal town of Abergele in Conwy, Wales was once an important Roman trading port and is perhaps best known today for the beautiful white sands of the beach, where legend and sightings tell of a ghost ship. The River Gele runs through the town that is home to Grade I listed Gwyych Castle; in its day, this was a magnificent 19^th century folly built on the site of a former Norman Castle dating from the 12^th century. Abergele is surrounded by hills and woodland as well as caves that make it popular with walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. There are also several sites of historic interest, including two Iron Age hill forts at Castell Cawr and on the hill above town is a 17^th century watchtower. Abergele was the site of the worst rail disaster of its time in 1868 when 33 people lost their lives; they are buried in a mass grave in the local churchyard.

Abergele offers plenty of amenities, shops, eateries and pubs as well as a wealth of attractions in the area, along with sites of interest and historic buildings. Abergele’s St. Michael's Parish Church was built on the site of an earlier Celtic monastery and contains an unusual tombstone which states “Here lieth a man who had his dwelling three miles to the north”; this inscription is all the more curious because three miles north of the grave is now more than two miles out to sea. The memorial to those who lost their lives in the 1868 train crash is also here in the churchyard. For visitors who come for the beach, there are two miles of soft white sand and safe, clean bathing along with stunning views to enjoy.
