Aberdare

The industrial town of Aberdare is in the Welsh County of Glamorgan, in the well known Rhondda Cynon Taf. An abundance of coal and iron ore created the industry and prosperity that came in the 19th century to Aberdare. It lies at the edge of the magnificent Brecon Beacons National Park and was once at the heart of Welsh culture. In 1861 Aberdare hosted the first National Eisteddfod in 1861 and again in 1885 and 1956 at Aberdare Park. The Gorsedd Standing Stones still exist in the park today.

Many visitors come to enjoy the sights and activities offered by the Brecon Beacons, including; forest walks, hiking, cycling, bird watching, mountain biking trails, horse riding and climbing. With beautiful reservoirs, waterfalls and canal walks, there is tranquillity here too. In Aberdare itself, the Coliseum Theatre offers entertainment as the main arts venue and was built in 1938 using miners' subscriptions. Locally, the Brecon Mountain Railway, Big Pitt National Coal Museum, Dan Yr Ogof Caves, St. Fagans Museum of Welsh Life and the Rhondda Heritage Park provide much for the visitor to Aberdare.
